5月23日 Boondock DorksThere’s a line in Barbet Schroeder’s "Barfly" during which Mickey Rourke’s Bukowski-an intellectual declares this of Frank Stallone’s meatball bartender: “He symbolizes everything that disgusts me: Obviousness, unoriginal macho energy, ladies man.” Though I’m not sure about “ladies man,” the same could be said of Troy Duffy’s "The Boondock Saints." An obvious, unoriginal and over the top picture filled with insipid “macho energy,” the film tries so hard you almost feel sorry for it. Almost. So begins my DVD review (you can read it here) of this film's Special Edition which hits streets today. Fans (and there are legions--baffling) will be happy. Great. I wasn't too pleased. Especially after listening to not only Duffy's lame commentary track but Billy Connolly's as well. Instead of "Boondock," I urge you to watch the great, horrifying and horrifying hilarious documentary about Duffy and his film and music journey "Overnight." That's a real bloodbath. Oh yes, and back to Rourke's declaration about the bartender in "Barfly." Not surprisingly, Duffy was a bartender too. --posted by Kim
