9月4日 Jerry Lewis Raises Over 63 Million
Comic legend Jerry Lewis conducted his 42nd surreal, funny, inspiring, helpful, painful and...I think I might be tripping on some California Sunshine telethon over Labor Day weekend. He set a new record by raising $63.7 million to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
He also managed to anger a lot of people and shock his audience when he dropped a derogatory term towards homosexuals during a rambling joke aimed at a member of his production team. GLAAD demanded an apology and Lewis issued one:
"I apologize to anyone who was offended. Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. In the family atmosphere of the telethon, I forget that not everyone knows me that well.
"That something like this would distract from the true purpose of the telethon pains me deeply. ... I accept responsibility for what I said. There are no excuses."
Um, this is Jerry Lewis. I'm not saying he didn't slip up here (it's a family show and you can feel his regret as he stumbles through the joke) but I'm sure he's said far worse in his comedic life.
Anyway, in researching historic footage of Jerry Lewis being mean to other people, I found this gem from the classic "What's My Line?" and...OK this is actually pretty funny. God this show was great.
