    Big E And BB On DVD

    William Powell and Myrna Loy, Brigitte Bardot, Luis Bunuel, Flash Gordon and Elvis? All of them? This is my kind of Tuesday.
     
    All of these talents get their own DVD box set or special edition released today.
     
    The biggest deal for many is the Elvis set which commemorates the 30 years since Presley's passing (yes, it's been that long). Paramount has released a nifty collection of the big E on the big screen, blue suede box and all. 
     
     
    It's been 30 years since the King left the earthly bounds of his blue suede shoes for his Graceland in the sky. To commemorate the anniversary, Warner Bros. and Paramount have teamed up for a promotion featuring more Elvis than you can shake a hip at. "Jailhouse Rock: Deluxe Edition" (1957) is arguably his definitive screen appearance, playing a working-class kid who lands in stir after a bar fight gone bad and emerges surly, hardened, and with a gift for rocking. He's not much of an actor, but he's dynamic in the film's set piece, where he swivels and shakes through a dance number set to the title song. "It's just the beast in me." MGM musical specialist George Sidney helms "Viva Las Vegas: Deluxe Edition" (1963) and gives the musical numbers a dynamic that no other Elvis film has, while Elvis meets his match in screen spitfire Ann-Margret. Colonel Tom Parker made sure a co-star never again made Elvis work for the spotlight in one of his movies. The featurettes on "Jailhouse" and "Viva" are routine productions with more visual flash than interesting background. The commentary tracks, both delivered by music journalist Steve Pond (author of "Elvis in Hollywood"), are much more interesting and informative.

    Agreed. I wrote a piece on "Wild in the Country" (the movie was written by Clifford Odets!) as one of the more underrated Elvis pictures. 
     
    I always heard that Streisand wanted Elvis for "A Star Is Born" which would have been so perfect. I love Kris Kristofferson but Elvis could have changed the course of his career with that one.

Most of the films he made were terrible and he knew it; even worse, the songs he had to sing  in those later films were often wretched. How he could be so professional in the face of such crap was amazing (just listen to some of the songs in "Paradise, Hawaiian Style").

    But see him in "King Creole" or "Wild in the Country" and he's a burning talent in need of focus and training, and in "Flaming Star" he gives what I think is the best performance in his career. Like any good director, Don Seigel spotted his strengths and played them up. His physical performance makes him look like he grew up on a frontier homestead, ready for danger at any moment, wordlessly backing the lead of his older brother (played by Steve Forrest). Their chemistry is amazing and Elvis is very good in the action scenes too. He might have had a future as an actual actor had not the Colonel squandered his time on cheap comedies, cranked out with little effort and less thought, for quick payoff. The Colonel was all about milking his property before the fad wore off. Elvis cared about his legacy. Thank goodness he still had his music and the "68 Comeback Special."
