This week's DVD releases are a Criterion delight (sounds like a dish).

There's the brilliant "Brute Force," there's "La Haine" (which my friend and colleague DK Holm claims is a movie tailor made for me) and there's "Overlord" all getting the special Criterion treatment. Other notable discs are Mike Hodges' "Pulp," Robert Altman's "Thieves Like Us" and last year's "Notes on a Scandal," a movie I love in spite of its weak ending that rejects the novel's darker bite. But no matter, I have a thing for Judi Dench as the cynical spinster and find value in some of what she says--no matter how deranged. But I need to get out of my apartment more.

	Robert Shugertwrote: "La Haine" is an awesome piece of filmmaking. Severely underrated. Beautifully shot in black and white to bring out the intensity of each scene and a soundtrack that moves the film along with ease. Three disaffected thugs who feel invisible within their surroundings deal with suburban blight, hopelessness and police brutality after a riot in modern day France. Bitchin' premise with an ending to match. Own this film. Good call KM. The companion to "La Haine" in documentary form would be "Bus 174", which also touches on a youth culture that has been abused, abandoned and left for dead by society. Own both. Apr. 18
