The good, wholesome holiday fun of Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto" propelled it to the top of the box office heap over the weekend, grossing about $14 million.

"The Holiday," a romantic comedy with Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, Kate Winslet and Jude Law, and "Happy Feet," that penguin thing, followed in the second and third spots, the AP reports.

The violence of Gibson's Mayan murder-fest led to some vivid headlines. For example, MTV.com's report on the weekend's ticket sales read: "'Apocalypto' Now: Mel Mangles Penguins, Diaz To Grab Box-Office # 1." Which isn't really a sentence you want to read first thing on a Monday morning.
